School is back in session, but that doesn't mean the reading fun should stop. In fact, reading is a great way to relax after all the homework and activities are done. What better way to escape from reality than diving into a fairy tale retelling?

Fairy tale retellings are pretty hot right now. Both Beastly and Red Riding Hood came out last winter, at least two versions of Snow White are coming out, and two TV shows with fairy tale themes are starting up this fall. And before you start saying that fairy tales are for girls, they're not. There are some good retellings for boys, too.

New Books and Beginnings

You guys did a tremendous job this summer with the summer reading program. I was completely blown away by the 217 people who participated. Stay tuned, though. We'll be calling the Grand Prize Winner soon, so stick close to your phone.

In the meantime, it's time to get ready to go back to school. I hope you've done your summer reading, and that you're ready for a brand new school year.

But just because school is starting back up, that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop reading for fun. We're still getting awesome new books in, and maybe some of these will interest you.

Summer is now drawing to a close, and with it, the summer reading program. Thank you to everyone for making this year another great success!

But the fun doesn't end there. With the start of school, we've brought back the Teen Trivia Game.

Choose a question, find the answer, and win candy. What kind of candy? Why, Tootsie Roll Pops, of course.

Also, we've gotten a ton of new books in this past month. I'll share a few of them with you tomorrow.

The sun is out, the heat is up, and the beaches are filling up. It's summertime, and you know what that means...the Young Adult Summer Reading Program!

I know what you're thinking, and it isn't all about the books you have to read for school (but, really, why not win prizes for reading those books, right?). Actually, you can read anything you want - books, magazines, instructions for a video game, web pages, Facebook, or blogs. You could even listen to audio books.

Once you've read something, either pick up an entry form at our library or go to our website - You Are Here YA Summer Reading Program. Fill it out and then either e-mail it or bring it into the library. You get a choice of free fries or free ice cream just for entering.

Keep reading and keep entering. Each entry counts as a chance to win a weekly prize.

When you reach 800 pages, you'll get a free T-shirt and a free value meal from McDonald's. You'll also be entered in the drawing for the Grand Prize!

If you've caught the promos lately, Captain Jack Sparrow is up to no good again in a new movie coming out on May 20. I don't know about you, but I love this character, and I love all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

So, in the spirit of the new movie, we're going to be showing the first three for free. That's right, you read it correctly - for free!

The schedule looks like this:

POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl - Tuesday, May 3, at 5 pm

POTC: Dead Man's Curse - Tuesday, May 10, at 5 pm

POTC: At World's End - Tuesday, May 17, at 5 pm

All three movies are rated PG-13, but everyone ise welcome. Bring your friends and come enjoy the silliness. And, yes, you're allowed to say lines along with the movies. That always makes it more fun.

Teen Chillax Week

Review: I absolutely loved this book. It was funny, and it was a different take on vampires.

Vlad felt very real to me, balancing the normal anxieties every eighth grader deals with and his life as a half-vampire. He has a loyal best friend who loves to get him into trouble. he has an aunt who cares about him and supplies him with blood. You totally cheer for Vlad.

The plot was fast-paced. It kept you guessing, never letting you know who the bad guy was. It was a totally fun read.

Monday Movie!

So, Monday is a day off. Not sure what you want to do that day? Want to come watch a free movie at the library?

At 1:00 on Monday, March 21, we'll be showing How to Train Your Dragon.

It tells the story of a young Viking who befriends a young dragon, but Vikings and dragons aren't supposed to get along. It's rated PG and will run for 98 minutes.

Bring your friends or your younger siblings. It'll be fun for everyone!

As you probably know, Hollywood is making Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games into a movie. And now they've cast the female lead, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss will be played by Jennifer Lawrence, who had an Oscar nod for her role in Winter's Bone.

Review: Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready

This ability has long annoyed her, and she has yearned to find out why the phenomenon happened so that she can end it. Now, still very much in love, Aura is ecstatic to see and hear Logan's spirit, though they can't touch. Then Zachary, a new boy, enters the picture and he and Aura discover that they share a mysterious bond: they were born one minute apart (he the last one pre-Shift and she the first after). Review: I honestly wasn't sure I would like this book as much as I did. Aura was a very likable main character. Even though I wanted to shake her sometimes, I realized that she was dealing with her unique situation much like any teenaged girl would. Zachary was also a very interesting character, and I was giddy over the whole Scottish thing.

The world was very well-built, with the color red everywhere and a scary government organization. Like Aura, I'd like to know what caused the Shift and made the world the way it was.

Excellent plot, excellent world. I'd like the sequel now, please.

Review: At first, I wasn't sure if this would be my thing. Cassia starts out very compliant, saying things like, "The Society never makes mistakes." But then I discovered the beauty of this book. Cassia changes in so many subtle ways and learns to quietly fight for her freedom.

This was truly a wonderful story, and I'm dying to see what happens.

Review: I Am Number Four by Pitticus Lore

Review: I've heard some people call this book the Superman story for this generation. Not sure if that's true, but it's a rip-roaring, adventurous ride. The action is awesome, and the descriptions of Lorien make the world sound incredible. If you like action and adventure (and really don't want to read another Twilight-like book), then this one is for you.

Review: This book was very enjoyable. It was all the fun of a soap opera, but set in a historical setting. And you don't find too many books set in 1929.

Cordelia and Astrid were interesting characters. You could tell how different they were, with Astrid growing up rich and Cordelia coming from a farm in Ohio. They made quite a few mistakes, some with dangerous consequences, but it was fun to watch them grow.

Letty, however, was my favorite. She had the toughest route in the novel. She had to work for a living and learn about things the hard way, much like most women who travel to New York City. I look forward to seeing her grow in the next novel.

All in all, I very much liked this one.

A Long Walk to Water

Review: I actually really, really enjoyed this book. It's one of the best faerie books I've read in a while. Dana sounded like a teenager as she narrated the story, and the choices she made were very believable for a teen as well. Excellent pacing, excellent plotting. I highly recommend it.

I don’t actually choose where I go on tour. The schedule is handed to me. It’s decided by the publicity/marketing department(s) at my publisher(s). I think most of the events for The Last Little Blue Envelope have been set up, so it’s mostly the fall tour that’s open. I’ve been suggesting that people tweet their requests to @penguinteen and @HarperCollinsUK, because, why not? It’s especially helpful if you have a bookstore or a library, because they are probably not going to send me to your house. At least, I don’t think they will."

A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Review: The world and the character Card created are incredible. It was interesting to see Ender grow and change, despite what the adults do to him. There is a lot of technology and action, and several parts made it feel like you were in the middle of a video game. Definitely a good read for those who like video games and/or science fiction.

National Novel Writing Month

It's November so I'd like to wish you a Happy National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short.

What is NaNoWriMo, you ask? It's a month-long writing challenge that was started in 1999 by a couple of guys from San Francisco. The goal is to write 50,000 words of a novel in one month.

Does that sound like fun to you? That sounds like fun to me. So much so, that we'll be holding write-ins every Tuesday this month from 5-6 p.m. for teenagers who want to take on the challenge and write with other teenagers.

The dates are November 2, 9, 16, and 23. You can come to one of them or two or all. All writers between the ages of 11 and 18 are welcome!

A ton of new books just arrived this week, ranging from fantasy to mystery to historical fiction to suspense. Here are a few of them:

Creature of the Night

Mystery. Rebellious and resentful Bobby, 14, is ripped from his world of drugs and theft in Dublin and forced to move to a seemingly sleepy farm community. After stealing and demolishing a car that belonged to a man who inexplicably disappeared, he is required by the simple, very human Dooley family, from whom his mother is renting a house, to make amends in the form of farm labor. At home, his mother is too worn out and irresponsible to care about her son's indiscretions unless they impact her directly. And they both ignore four-year-old Dennis when he talks about his new nighttime friend, "a little woman." Bobby makes grand plans to escape the farm and the Dooleys' imposed servitude for the wild nights of Dublin. But when his city friends sell him out and he is left wandering the streets alone, the honesty and integrity of sore muscles and a hard day's work become more appealing.

The Cruisers

Realistic Fiction. Because of what they've written in their alternative newspaper, The Cruiser, four eighth-grade friends are given an assignment rather than suspension. Classmates at the DaVinci Academy, a school for talented and gifted students, Zander, LaShonda, Kambui, and Bobbi are to be peacekeepers during a Civil War unit and prevent another war from breaking out. They use their newspaper to raise awareness and eventually ease tensions between the opposing factions, a group of white athletes who call themselves Sons of the Confederacy and a large population of African-American students and others who don't want to associate themselves with racist sentiments. Adding to the tension is the threat of expulsion if the friends can't prevent the fighting; their grades have been slipping and the administration is beginning to doubt their dedication to such a prestigious and competitive school.

Gorgeous
Rachel Vail

Contemporary Fantasy. This second book about the Avery sisters retells the events in Lucky (HarperTeen, 2008) from the perspective of middle sister Allison. She sees herself as the plainest of the three, stuck between two pillars of perfection, and wishes she, too, were gorgeous. The ninth grader also has to come to terms with the effect that the loss of her mother's high-powered job has on the entire family. One night, she dreams that she has sold her cell phone to the devil in return for at least seven people who think she is gorgeous, and strangely, after the dream, things start to change in her life.

Immortal Beloved
Cate Tiernan

Dark fantasy. Nastasya has spent the last century living as a spoiled, drugged-out party girl. She feels nothing and cares for no one. But when she witnesses her best friend, a Dark Immortal, torture a human, she realizes something's got to change. She seeks refuge at a rehab for wayward immortals, where she meets the gorgeous, undeniably sexy Reyn, who seems inexplicably linked to her past. Historical Fiction. Joining the growing list of titles based on Anne Frank’s diary, this novel is written from the viewpoint of Peter van Pels, who is nearly 16 in 1942 when he and his parents join the Franks in hiding in their Amsterdam attic. Meticulous about distinguishing fact from fiction, the author points out that Anne’s view in The Diary may have contradicted Peter’s story. Here, she irritates him at first, and she invades his privacy in the crowded space. Then he and Anne get closer, flirt, and kiss. Peter asks her not to put their relationship in her diary, which raises a crucial question: What did Anne leave out?

Review: I'm breaking my fantasy streak with this one, but when it came in on the cart, I couldn't resist. This book gives you a look at fame from the other side. Audrey's voice is real, and she handles situations much like a real teenager would. You see her grow throughout the book and become stronger. All the other characters are very real, too, and I found myself wanting to know what happens. An excellent read, and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes music.

Books, CDs, audio and video tapes are available at the Charleston County Friends of the Library book sale. Prices start at 50 cents.
Items for sale include books, CDs, audio and video tapes and more. New fiction and classics, histories, biographies, how-to books and coffee-table books will share space with children’s stories and books on tape.
All money raised at the sales will be used benefit the Charleston County Public Library to pay for materials and programs.
The Friends of the Library is a non-profit support organization involved in raising funds for services, equipment, training, materials and programs for the county library. The Friends collect and sort donated books, tapes and records for resale at events held throughout the year at branch libraries.

Teen Read Week is coming!

October 14-20 stop by the library to check out great Young Adult/Teen books, music, and movies, and help us celebrate.

We are also having a Teen Advisory Board Party on Tuesday, October 16th at 4:30. Join us for games, snacks and fun.The theme this year is LOL (Laugh Out Loud) @ the library.

Stop by the information desk during Teen Read Week to submit your jokes and receive a prize. Yes, there is laughing at the library. ;)

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month

Come to the library in September and celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up month by getting your very own library card. Stop by the checkout counter and go to where the sign says register to get your card. You will have access to great books, movies, music, and more.

Here are some tips and reminders for you:

- You may have unlimited amount of books.
- You may have 5 music CDs, 5 videos, 5 DVDs, 5 audio books at one time.
- Fines for books are $.10 per day (max of $5.00 per item), videos, CDs, DVDs are $.50 per day (max of $10.00 per item).
- We can request items from other branches and have them sent here for you to pick up.

Congrats to Grand Prize Winner Sara Stottler!

Sara Stottler from Mount Pleasant is the winner of the Grand Prize for the iRead Summer Reading!!! She won a years supply of Blue Bell Ice Cream and a party for 12 at IMAX theatre with popcorn and soda and catered by Sticky Fingers. Sounds like fun!
Summer Reading is over for 2007 but there is always next year...........

I just want to congratulate all 209 summer readers at Mt.Pleasant. The winners of the grand prize should be notified this week. The winner of the ipod shuffle and digital camera should be announced later in the month. I am very proud of all the readers. If you still have a prize to pick up please stop by the information desk.
